It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's a Formula 1 car!

This is one amazing shot. I would be interested to see if anyone can hunt down some video footage of the crash. To do so we probably need to know where the crash occurred.

Thanks to Rob who sent in quite a few photos. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of his collection.

To start things off, I can safely say that this race was not in Australia. Our media rules prohibit the advertising of cigarettes in sporting events (something about it sending the wrong message to kids). So when the F1 is in Melbourne the Marlboro logo is blanked out.

KIT retired from crime fighter to F1 race car. If only I could zoom in to see if David Hasselhoff (sp?) is driving.

I Think its the same in Canada, I know a law was proposed a couple of years back, I'm not 100% sure if it was passed or not

Maybe the tobacco advertising has changed since this pic. It was indeed Australia, Albert Park in Melbourne in fact. March 3, 2002. Ralph Schumacher is the pilot, er driver. Here's a series of 37 photos from the crash. Note the Foster's and Helix ads on the sidelines: www.viewimages.com/Search.aspx?mid=52724970&epmid=2&partner=Google YouTube Video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N4nZJpk-6o And pics from the official Formula1 website: www.formula1.com/gallery/race/2002/5/

Ignore the link to images above it doesn't work, even if you could figure out where the end of the link was, but here's the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N4nZJpk-6o

I didnt get a chance to watch the video or see the pics on this crash, but what do you think caused the car to become airborn? My only guess would be that the front tire of the car thats now airborn came in contact with the rear tire of a car that was in front of him. Then when the car in front of him hit his brakes to go into the turn, wedged his tire under the now flying car's tire. Then maybe someone behind both of them rear-ended the already-in-trouble car and sent him airborn? (This is just a theory and havent seen any of the documentation, what do you guys think?)

I think Mike's got it right. You can see several pieces of the rear wing being energetically dispersed across the track. Schumacher must have pushed the JUMP button on the steering wheel a little bit late. I hate when that happens.

It was Ralph Shumacher in Australia, right at the start of the race. Coming up on the first turn of the very first lap.

Quintem commented on November 14, 2007

Wow, can it really be from the Melbourne Grand Prix? This is an example of the Ferrari in Melbourne: www.flickr.com/photos/emilgh/425093744/ compared with a Ferrari from Zandvoort ni 2001 www.flickr.com/photos/hrp-photography/103492868/

Ralph, in the Williams BMW, "flew" over Rubens Barichello in the Ferrari. Ralph was surprised (???) when Rubens slowed almost to a stop for the first turn.
